All ATMs of Intesa Sanpaolo Banka BiH will accept UnionPay cards

Sarajevo, December 11, 2019. –Intesa Sanpaolo Banka announced today its acceptance cooperation UnionPay International (UPI), the subsidiary of China UnionPay that focuses on UnionPay’s international business, which enables the acceptance of UnionPay cards on all ATM devices of Intesa Sanpaolo Banka BiH. The announcement was made Intesa Sanpaolo Banka made by representatives of UPI completing the first transaction with a UnionPay card at Intesa’s ATM in Sarajevo. Intesa Sanpaolo Banka thus becomes one of the first banks to enable cash withdrawal from its ATM devices to UnionPay cardholders, while the later phases will enable acceptance of UnionPay cards at its POS devices in stores. The festivity organized for this occasion was attended by Mr. Xie, Counselor of Embassy People’s Republic of China in BIH; Mr.Yang Shengliang, Deputy General Manager Europe Branch, UPI; Mr.Andy Xie, Head of Balkan Region, UPI; Ms.Jessie Jiang, Business Development Manager for Balkan Region, UPI and member of Management Board Intesa Sanpaolo Banka BiH Stefano Borsari, Edin Izmirlija and Amir Termiz.

“We are very glad to cooperate with Intesa Sanpaolo Banka BiH, an important partner of ours in BiH, to further expand our acceptance footprint in the country. According to the data from China Tourism Academy, Europe is the second largest destination for Chinese travellers only after Asia, and BiH is rapidly gaining popularity among Chinese travellers since it launched visa-free entry policy to Chinese citizens,” said Yang Shengliang, Deputy General Manager of UnionPay International Europe.

“To offer greater payment ease for UnionPay cardholders visiting Europe, UPI continues to improve our acceptance network in the region. As of today, UnionPay cards are accepted in 90% of European countries with an overall acceptance rate of over 65%. We believe our partnership with Intesa Sanpaolo Banka BiH will further enhance our cardholders’ payment experience in the country” he added.

“By signing this agreement, the Intesa Sanpaolo Banka BiH became one of the first banks in BiH to accept UnionPay cards at its ATMs, and later on at its POS devices. We are very happy to become partners with another international payment brand and the preferred payment brand for Chinese customers, since BiH records constant increase of tourists and businessmen from this far away Asian country, and the entire region.

According to available information, only in the first eight months this year, more than 65.000 Chinese citizens visited BiH, which shows possibilities and significant business potential, when it comes to cashless transactions issued by this global company” said Amir Termiz, Member of the Management Board Intesa Sanpaolo Banka BiH.

Intesa Sanpaolo Banka BiH joined other banks – daughters of Intesa Sanpaolo Group from Croatia (PBZ Bank) and Slovenia (Intesa Sanpaolo Bank), which already accept the UnionPay cards.
